Frequently Asked Questions
The most effective leaders are those who skillfully navigate their environment, and in the process, help define it. The Betsy Magness Leadership Institute is designed to elevate women leaders in the cable and telecommunications industry. Structured introspection, grappling with universal professional challenges and the opportunity to shift perspectives within an empowering learning community enables fellows to make the transition from effective managers to enduring leaders. By making genuine connections within their class, fellows emerge with a committed passion to share what they’ve learned with their teams, companies and the industry as a whole.
Named in honor of one of the industry’s most successful leaders, the Betsy Magness Leadership Institute maximizes participants’ ability to lead in the midst of change while strengthening their sponsoring company with an invaluable business commodity: leadership. Over 400 women have completed this nationally recognized program and continue to be actively engaged in transforming our industry. For more than twenty-five years, Women in Cable Telecommunications has set the industry standard for women’s leadership development programs. The Betsy Magness Leadership Institute is recognized as the flagship leadership development program of the cable and telecommunications industry.
The Betsy Magness Leadership Institute celebrates more than 15 years of preparing senior-level women to take on significant leadership responsibilities with an enhanced program.
The BMLI Fellow
The Betsy Magness Leadership Institute (BMLI) Fellows participate in a yearlong educational program which provides direct feedback, personal development, and industry involvement. The 2008-2009 year includes two 27-person classes, which shall be designated Class XVIII and Class XIX, respectively.
These distinguished women have already displayed exemplary leadership skills; the potential to excel in executive level positions; and the ability to mentor others. They are smart, strategic risk takers, and they each possess an openness to learn new ideas and a continued interest in growth opportunities. BMLI alumnae return to their companies with enhanced leadership skills and a renewed vision of their strengths and goals, and they join other alumnae to serve as a new generation of leaders for our industry.
The Curriculum
The BMLI curriculum includes leadership style assessments and addresses key issues such as risk-taking, leadership, and ethics. The program begins with an intensive one-week workshop on leadership exploration at the award-winning Center for Creative Leadership in Greensboro, North Carolina. Following the October orientation, the additional sessions cover important leadership attributes, including personal power and negotiation skills.
Fellows have the opportunity to work with an expert to develop their leadership presence. While the sessions focus on intensive in-class learning, Fellows will also study between class sessions, working in small groups to review and achieve their personal and professional goals, which they have created during their orientation week. Fellows also have reading assignments between sessions, and their final project, the Life Plan, challenges the Fellows to take charge of their personal and professional destinies.
