WICT Foundation Pay Equity Initiative
In 1997 and 1998 the Foundation launched a series of studies to benchmark the pay between men and women within the telecommunications industry. The salary studies focused on three segments of the industry: employees of video distribution companies, programming companies and employees working in technical areas. Overall, the three surveys showed similar trends. Each revealed that there was a pay gap between men and women, and demographic factors such as education; tenure and promotion rates did not explain these gaps. Surprisingly, in most cases, larger gaps were found as the data was broken into various demographic components for analysis.
The Foundation released three white papers from the studies, The Fifteen Percent Gap, Eighteen Percent Less and Technical Pay Gap to inform the industry of the pay gap between men and women in the industry. The Foundation white papers provided companies with tools to assist them in trying to close the gap. Additionally, the Foundation generated pay equity content and proposed expert speakers for WICT programs and events.
