"Being a new member of WICT has inspired me to reach for the stars with my career. It is so nice to be a part of an organization that empowers women. One of my favorite aspects of the organization is the networking and relationships that I've built with such strong and supportive individuals. WICT is an organization where women encourage one another to be the very best they can be. I am truly proud to be a member of this outstanding organization."

A Message From Your Chapter President
Greetings WICT Northern California Chapter members!
Welcome to an exciting new year, and what better way to start than to extend a huge thank you to our 2010 Board and outgoing President, Bev Wilmore. Thanks to the tremendous work under Bev's leadership, WICT Northern California is the proud winner of the 2010 "Inspire" Award for its Model Chapter Business Plan and support of WICT's Touchstones.
In 2011, I encourage you to take full advantage of all that WICT has to offer -
our programs/events, conferences, mentoring and scholarship opportunities, professional and personal growth and development.
We already have some exciting events lined up for the 1st quarter of this year (see the events section of this Newsletter). In addition, in the month of February, WICT Northern California will once again conduct our annual survey in which we will seek feedback to ensure our programs and speakers are aligned with the needs of our members.
Recently, I had the honor of interviewing Steve White (President of Comcast's West Division), and wanted to revisit Steve's notion of "Hopes and Dreams" (see Steve White "In the Spotlight" in this newsletter). At the start of a new year, it's a perfect time to take stock of where you are, where you are going, and course correct to where you would like to go. To quote Steve, "What are your hopes and dreams from a career perspective and a personal standpoint?" And, how will you get there?
Planning is something we do without thinking for the everyday things in life: "to do" reminders, sticky notes, Outlook appointments, shopping lists, birthdays and so on. But what about our professional and personal development - that new job, class to develop new skills, healthy eating/workout plan, work-life balance, vacation in paradise, volunteer work or successful retirement?
Of course, maybe you're great at making New Year's resolutions, and sticking to them. But, if you're like me, and you're scratching your head to remember exactly what that resolution was, maybe it's time for your 2011 Game Plan.
There's an American proverb that says: "If you don't have a plan for yourself, you'll be part of someone else's."
Join me in kickstarting the new year, and let's make 2011 your year of "hopes and dreams."

Happy planning!

Steve White serves as the President of Comcast's West Division. In this role, he is the senior executive responsible for all Comcast cable operations in Arizona, California, Colorado, Kansas, Minnesota, New Mexico, Oregon, Texas, Utah, Washington and Wisconsin. He leads nearly 25,000 employees and serves more than six million customers, driving annual revenue of nearly $11 billion.
Q: I recently read an interesting
truism in business, "that people never
quit a company. They quit their boss.
People never really join a company. They join a boss." And, the underlying reason is because they're excited to work for that
boss. That said, what makes you an exciting boss to work for?
A: "Well, that is a pretty big assumption, and I'd like to think
you talked to my people first and that they are excited to work
for me. That said, what I try hard to do to make it exciting for
my leaders is:
1. Set High Expectations
I fundamentally believe people have a desire to be the absolute best they can be. Some people are self starters, some work themselves crazy. But not everyone's wired that way. I believe people perform to a level of expectation. High expectations bestow a level of confidence that says, 'I believe in you so much, that I expect you to be the best in your area, or the best in your company.'

Q: First, would you please tell us what winning the boot camp scholarship means to you as a recent WICT member?
A: "Cable Boot Camp was a wonderful experience. I am very appreciative of the opportunity WICT has provided me. Every detail was taken care of, from my flight, to the hotel, and transportation to and from the Cable Center. It was inspiring to hear other WICT members discuss how WICT has helped in developing their careers. It makes me want to become more involved with WICT."
