Sara Arlia, Director of Sales, Comcast East Bay
We are proud to announce that
Sara Arlia
was promoted to Sales Director this January. She is now responsible for East Bay's subscriber forecast, meeting budgeted goals for TV, Internet and phone product lines. She also oversees the Direct Sales, Customer Service Center, Retail, Event and First in New Development (FIND) sales channels.
When asked what motivates her most, she said emphatically "it's the people!" It's the pride when one of her team thanks her for helping them move up in the company. In addition, Sara loves the "thrill of the chase" that comes with sales. She shared these three key lessons she's learned in her career:
1.
Employee Engagement
- "Your demeanor affects those who report to you, so engage and learn about your team. It builds trust. And, when you truly care about your employees, they will give you their best."
2.
Go Above And Beyond And Be Flexible
- "You have to jump in and do it! Be clear about what you want, find out what's needed to get that next position and volunteer to get the experience you need to get it. Become an expert by putting in extra time, and it will pay off in the long run. I set my sights on every job I've had well before I applied."
3.
Don't Take Things Personally
- "As a leader, you will have people criticize you. To be an effective leader, you need to look at yourself and identify areas of improvement. I regularly self-reflect about a conversation I had, or a meeting that I could have run better. Change is inevitable."
One thing that brings Sara joy outside of work is her family - her husband, and her new nephew and nieces. Sara says, "We are Italian and, in our family, 'La Famiglia e Tutti' (family is everything). Successful people need a partner, friend or parent who understands and supports them."

Tips to Wellness
Recognizing & Managing Stress is as Easy as 1,2,3
I read an article on
mylifestages.org
on stress and was surprised to learn how three easy steps can help manage stress and create a healthier, happier life.
According to the article, "stress" may be defined as "loss of control." Sources of stress may be produced by your job, family, relationships and finances. Most people can handle one or two stressful situations but, when things begin to pile up, stress can become dangerous and cause physical and mental harm - such as depression, anxiety, fatigue, sleep disorders, headaches and mood changes.
While no one is ever stress-free, incorporating the following three easy steps can help us cope better with the daily stresses in our lives:
1. Take a deep breath to clear your mind
2. Exercise
3. Make time for yourself - EVERYDAY
Remember, coaches, trusted friends, psychologists and family are always a good recommended source of support in times of stress.

Career Development in 2010
A Time for Learning ... in Earnest!
Admittedly, the largest obstacle I face in my career is habitude. Whether motivated by fear of failure or otherwise, resistance to change breeds an unimaginative and unremarkable atmosphere. It is the desire to avoid the pitfalls of complacency that leads me to make a plan--THIS year--to further develop my career by seeking out new ideas and methodology. And, perhaps, even take a bit more risk along the ride.
The sweeping economic difficulties for all of our employers in 2009 offered an opportunity for self-reflection. Fear of change did nothing but set people back, as our industry saw vast amounts of change in its people, plans, competition and financial viability. If we choose to embrace the fluctuating environment around us, we can make this a wonderful opportunity for learning. In order to reach toward innovation and avoid immobilization, we can begin by utilizing the great many opportunities WICT offers.
We can accomplish this through participating in mentoring activities and WICT initiatives and, even more simply, by taking to heart WICT's touchstones for growth:
Be a catalyst
- take responsibility for contributing new ideas to your business. Development comes from within. Have the confidence and self-respect to vocalize your viewpoint.
Inspire
- take notes from those who inspire you, and work to return the favor. Help others, and you will learn more about your own potential.
WICT ideology and contacts can assist in warding against fear of change. Try not to rest in the familiar, as it won't prove nearly as interesting as embracing variety. Allow yourself the opportunity to learn in unconventional ways, and don't forget...STRETCH!
