Cable History: You’ll receive a broad overview of the cable landscape, including facts, figures, where and how it all began, what’s changed and where the industry is headed. The Players - Operators and Programmers: This session will focus on cable's key players, primarily the operators and programmers. You’ll learn who these key players are, what they do, their organizational structures and how their roles have shifted. In addition, you’ll find out about other players in the industry, including vendors, analysts, advertisers and regulators, and discover why consumer trends can quickly alter the best-laid plans. The Business of Cable: Knowing the history and “who” of the cable industry will give you a good foundation for learning more about the business of cable, including: various business models, programming negotiations and measures of success. This session will focus on business considerations and will include recent financial data on the industry to see how the industry is faring. You'll also take a close look at the key factors that will continually shift the cable business. Competition in Cable: If you read any of the industry publications or the Wall Street Journal, you know that the cable industry is fiercely competitive and companies are constantly assessing who is their competition and how to become a market leader. By addressing satellite, telcos, broadcasters and Internet service providers, you’ll learn how the industry players position themselves, how they view the competition and which efforts differentiate them from the rest. Regulations and the Industry: Knowing how cable is regulated is an important part of learning the industry and this session will discuss regulation at the state and federal level. Find out major regulatory issues at the local, state and national levels, and learn how they affect the cable industry. The Technology Behind Cable: During the technology sessions you learn how cable systems work, what new technologies are emerging and gain insights on new products that are entering the marketplace. From bandwidth to switched digital, this session will explain the technologies that drive the industry in everyday language. Then, on day two, you will have the opportunity take a deeper dive into network components and advanced services such as video on demand, high-speed data and digital voice.
Cable Financial Essentials: Do you know your ARPU from your RGUs? In this session, you’ll take a deeper look into the financial side of the cable industry. Learn more about revenue, cash flow, key financial metrics and tools used by the industry, plus explore the economics of cable investments. You’ll complete ROI case studies regarding plant operations, switched digital and wideband services.
