Doreen Akune is the Director of Network Operations for Scripps Networks Interactive in Knoxville, Tennessee. Doreen is responsible for managing all activities, equipment and quality control procedures within a multi-network broadcast environment. She supervises all operational and technical aspects within Network Operations ensuring quality control standards and efficient workflows. Her team is responsible for the technical integrity for all programs, shows and promos prior to air and to mitigate on air outages for the 6 networks and 18 feeds. Doreen was instrumental in the launch of the three new networks, GAC, Travel Channel and Cooking Channel, as well as the addition of the HD feeds to all 6 networks.
Early in her career, Doreen worked as a bank teller while attending California State University, L.A. where she earned a Bachelor’s degree in Radio and TV Communication. She interned and became a full time employee at Movietime Channel as a Master Control Operator. Movietime was rebranded and relaunched as E! Entertainment Television. She worked at E! for 12 years first as a Master Control Operator and moved into the Duplications department which consisted of one rack of tape decks for commercial dubbing. The department grew to include full duplications services for different formats and closed captioning. She was promoted to Director and created the Closed Captioning department to ensure the FCC requirements were followed. With the success of E! domestically, the shows were distributed to overseas countries which required orders to be placed for standards conversion at an out of house of facility. When the international distribution grew exponentially, Doreen advocated outfitting her department with the necessary equipment to complete the requests in house instead of shipping them out to a third party. The standards conversion requests were brought in house which lowered costs.
Doreen is an active member of WICT Southeast Chapter and attended the WICT Leadership Conference, WICT Book Clubs and the Taste of WICT.
In her spare time, Doreen enjoys traveling and running and has completed 13 half marathons. She combined both of her favorite activities together and made running one race in each state as her goal.
