Letter from the President - Feburary 2013

 Say Yes to the Prom!

Its official, Greater Chicago has turned into a winter wonderland. Even though it feels like green grass and warm weather are a long way off, Punxsutawney Phil predicted an early spring over the weekend! Now is the perfect time to start cleaning out your closets to prepare for the change in seasons. Why not start with all of your formal attire?

WICT Greater Chicago is partnering with Discovery Communications in a National Dress Donation Drive called Say Yes to the Prom. All of the donated dresses will be used for an event on March 26, 2013, at Discovery’s headquarters in Silver Spring, Maryland.  During this special prom event, 35 young women from local high schools will be pampered with head-to-toe makeovers and their choices of the most stylish prom looks and accessories.  Monte Durham from TLC's Say Yes to the Dress – Atlanta will once again be making an appearance to lend his expertise in making each girl’s look perfect. Click here to see a highlight video of last year’s first annual event! All of the remaining dresses will be given to DonateMyDress.org, who will ship the dresses to partner organizations in the U.S. – supporting many other underprivileged young women in our region.

Through February 19, the WICT Greater Chicago chapter will have collection boxes throughout the region where you can donate your almost new formal wear, jewelry and purses. No shoes, please. And guys ask your wives, girlfriends and sisters to check their closets. Did you know the average amount spent on a prom dress is $195? (Source: Seventeen Magazine) Don’t let cost stop a young woman from attending her prom. You know you have some old bridesmaid dresses you don’t need anymore!
