Presidential Thoughts from Hilda

The warm weather is finally here, summer is here! Personally, I love the warm weather. My goal and dreams are to move to a state that is warm all year round. In addition to that goal, I have also set career goals for myself.  However, it can be tough to work on my career goals, especially if I don't make the time to review them and mark my progress against achieving them. Goals can then be forgotten.

I read a great book that helped me get back on track.  I highly recommend this book.  It's called One Word by John Gordon, Dan Britton and Jimmy Page and will change your life.   This was the first book the WICT Greater Chicago Book Club read.  The book states that instead of creating endless goals and resolutions, you should use one word to be your driving force for the year. I found this book inspiring and developed my one word for the year. It is "health" and I'm focused on my & my team's health: physical, performance & relationship based. I was amazed at how this one word tied into all the goals that I have set. This one word helped me get back on track to help me achieve my goals. I hope you take the time to read the book too, and hopefully we can discuss it at our next WICT event.

I look forward to seeing you at our next WICT Greater Chicago event and hearing your accomplishments for the first half of the year. Here are few words of encouragement that should inspire you to continue to work on and accomplish your goals.

Start by doing what is necessary, then what is possible, and suddenly you are doing the impossible. - Francis of Assisi
Life is 10% what happens to us and 90% how we react to it.- Dennis P. Kimbro
"Don't limit yourself. Many people limit themselves to what they think they can do. You can go as far as your mind lets you. What you believe, remember, you can achieve - Mary Kay Ash, founder of Mary Kay cosmetics

Tech It Out Update

WICT Greater Chicago & NAMIC Chicago concluded a fantastic 2017 Tech It Out event focused on the Connected Home: Internet of Things (IoT) topic. There was a panel discussion of key ARRIS & Comcast leaders in this space, moderated by Peggy Smedley, Editorial Director & Founder, Connected World Magazine and Host of The Peggy Smedley Show.  The panel discussion included the following key speakers

  • Sharmila Ravi, Vice President, Product Development Xfinity Home and Internet of Things (IoT), Comcast Cable
  • Mike Richter, Director of Product Management for Comcast's Greater Chicago Region.
  • Massimo DiSabato, Technical Marketing Director, ARRIS

Also, for the first time, students, aged 12 and over, interested in exploring a STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) career were invited to the event.  24 students participated and had a fantastic time.

WICT Greater Chicago Book Club Update

We received such great feedback from the Visionary Leadership Breakfast in April about speaker Dawn Rosemond that the Book Club is planning to read her book Boss Presence for the next session.

"In the world of leadership and professional development it seems discussions surrounding this idea of 'executive presence' (what is it, how to get it, why you need it, etc.), is the 'new black'. Boss Presence is NOT an addition to that conversation. Instead, Boss Presence starts from the premise that we already have 'it' (i.e., all the 'presence' we need to win). Indeed, Boss Presence dares to boldly declare that we have already won -- that we were created to REIGN -- that we are in fact, royalty.

Thus, in Boss Presence, the author Dawn R. Rosemond, Esq., endeavors to convince readers (whom she calls 'bad chicks'), to take up their rightful positioning and own their royalty. Through humor and the transparent sharing of her life experiences, from 20+ years of being a woman of color practicing in 'big law', you'll gain some effective tips on how to REIGN at work, and beyond."

Dawn's book is free to Kindle Unlimited Subscribers and $5.99 from Amazon for those who like to feel the pages in their fingers. Order your book today!

The next Book Club is planned for August 9.

  •  Visionary Leadership Breakfast Update

The 7th Annual WICT Visionary Leadership Breakfast "The B.O.L.D. Factor" was held on Thursday, April 6, 2017 at the Renaissance Schaumburg Hotel. More than 200 registrants enjoyed networking and a bountiful breakfast to spearhead the event.

Highlights of the program included an engaging and inspiring panel of guest speakers including Jil Jordan Greene, CEO, The People Resource Group; Jill Morgenthaler, Retired Colonel and Author and Dawn Rosemond, Partner, Barnes & Thornburg LLP.

Each of the women shared their experiences from breaking through to excellence, overcoming obstacles, leading with influence and being destined to win. It was truly a remarkable event where people left inspired.  We closed the breakfast by having our 2016 Visionary Leader, Jodi Heiser, ARRIS Vice President of Sales, present the 2017 Visionary Leader Award to Peggy Sarason, Comcast Vice President of Finance and Accounting.

    Volunteer Events

Our June pledge drive at WTTW has concluded and we would like to thank everyone who volunteered their time, energy and experience. This year WICT answered the phone during the airing of Chicago's Lakefront with In-Studio Guest Geoffrey Baer who hosts the program. Pledge dollars raised allow WTTW to continue to provide quality arts, music and educational programming all year round.

Thank you again to everyone who helped make this year's WTTW pledge drive a huge success! We couldn't have done it without your help!

If you 've never volunteered with WICT Greater Chicago, I encourage you to be a part of the fun. We'd love to see you at the next event.
