Washington, DC – Women in Cable Telecommunications (WICT) today announced that Jackie Joyner-Kersee, Olympic legend and one of the greatest athletes in history, will speak during the opening general session of the 2016 WICT Leadership Conference on Monday, September 19, at the New York Marriott Marquis.

Joyner-Kersee won six medals (3 gold, 1 silver, 2 bronze) over four consecutive Olympic Games. In addition to her athletic success, Joyner-Kersee has devoted herself to philanthropy. In 1988, she established the Jackie Joyner-Kersee Foundation, which provides youth, adults, and families with the resources to improve their quality of life with special attention directed to East St. Louis, IL. In 2007, she, along with a number of well-known professional athletes, founded Athletes for Hope, a charitable organization that helps professional athletes get involved in charitable causes and inspires millions of non-athletes to volunteer and support the community.

Joyner-Kersee was recently named by Comcast Corporation as the national spokeswoman for Internet Essentials, the largest and most successful broadband adoption program in the country. Internet Essentials, which recently kicked off its sixth back-to-school season, has helped close the digital divide for more than 750,000 families, benefitting 3 million low-income Americans.

"Coming on the heels of the epic Olympic Games, we are thrilled to welcome one of our country’s most decorated Olympians, Jackie Joyner-Kersee. She is an exceptional individual who has leveraged her athletic celebrity to create a lasting legacy through her philanthropic endeavors," said Maria E. Brennan, CAE, WICT President & CEO. "Her insights on sports, life and giving back will no doubt inspire action from our audience."

The 2016 WICT Leadership Conference is a renowned leadership development event for the cable industry. Taking place September 19-20 at the New York Marriott Marquis as part of Cable’s Diversity Week, the conference includes interactive workshops, expert panels, coaching sessions, and peer-to-peer networking.
